The John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum Trailer Promises Everything We Love About the Indefatigable Assassin

Dogs! Katanas! Angelica Huston! This trailer has it all!

The trailer for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has dropped and it features everything you could ever want from the kinetic action-filled saga. The story picks up right where John Wick: Chapter 2 ended, with Wick on the run after being declared excommunicado from the Continental hotel with a $14 million bounty on his head. Wick has one hour to disappear before the bounty goes out and every assassin on the planet will be after him.

Chad Stahelski returns to direct the third installment of the franchise, which sees Wick traveling the world to escape and outsmart his fellow assassins. Along the way he runs into The Director (Angelica Huston), a member of the High Table, the cabal that oversees the assassins, as well as Sofia (Halle Berry), an assassin friend with a pack of killer dogs. And speaking of dogs, Wick is joined by his trusty pitbull from the first film. I don’t care how many people die in this film, but if that pitbull dies I will cry buckets.

Joining the case are Asia Kate Dillon (Billions), Marc Dacascos (Brotherhood of the Wolf), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Saïd Taghmaoui (Wonder Woman), and Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Laurence Fishburne will be reprising their roles from the previous films.

The title “Parabellum” is Latin for “prepare for war”, and it is also the name given to a World War I machine gun, a Luger pistol, and bullets. And if the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like Mr. Wick will be declaring war on the world. We get a glimpse of some exciting action sequences, including katana-wielding assassins on motorcycles, a room full of glass-encased skulls, and Wick galloping through the streets on a horse. This all happens over Frank Sinatra’s cover of “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” from the musical Man of La Mancha.

While I am obviously amped for this trailer, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that the motorcycle katana fight seems to be directly lifted from the 2017 South Korean action film The Villainess, which is an excellent assassin film well worth watching. The Villainess is getting a small screen adaptation from Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead).

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum hits theaters May 17th, and I cannot wait.
