From Game of Thrones‘ King in the North to (possibly) Prince Charming. Richard Madden might have found his niche in handsome royalty. I’m not complaining.
Deadline reports that Madden is on a list of actors begin considered to play the Prince in Disney’s live-action Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh. As for Cinderella herself, they name three actresses testing for the part this week, one of whom “will likely walk away with the title role”: Bella Heathcote, Margot Robbie, and Lily James.
All three actresses are relative unknowns (Heathcote had supporting roles in Dark Shadows and In Time; Robbie was in the quickly-cancelled Pan Am, and James played the hard-partying Lady Rose in season three of Downton Abbey), which marks a departure from the better-known actors mentioned as possible Cinderellas in the past. One of those was Emma Watson, who later turned the role down.
Whoever gets cast, they’ll join Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother. As /Film notes, the fact that Cindy’ll be played by someone yet to land a breakout role might indicate that the stepmother will be the main character, which I would be absolutely OK with. No offense to Heathcote, Robbie, or James. But she’s Cate Blanchett!
That said, though the combination of evil!Blanchett, Branagh, and Madden is an intriguing one… I just wish they were doing something other than a live-action Disney remake. But what can you do?
