Continuing his success with Ready Player One, filmmaker Steven Spielberg will be joining the DC Universe as the producer and a possible director for Blackhawk, according to the LA Times.

A comic from the 1940s, Blackhawk is comic series about a group known as the Blackhawks (or, the Blackhawk Squadron), a small team of World War II-era ace pilots of varied nationalities, led by Blackhawk. During the WWII era the comics outsold even Superman and today, the legacy of the characters lives on in characters like Lady Blackhawk.

Despite it being a comic book franchise, I could see how the WWII element would make it appealing for a director like Spielberg and regardless of my feelings about Ready Player One, the thing I have always appreciated about him is that he is not afraid of making a genre film.

“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure,” said Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman. “We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring ‘Ready Player One’ to the screen,” Spielberg said. “They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on ‘Blackhawk.’”

David Koepp, who has frequently collaborated with Spielberg, has been tapped to write the screenplay for Blackhawk.

Blackhawk is going to be a few years in the distance, since Spielberg will be working on fifth Indiana Jones movie and West Side Story. Thankfully, we have Ava’s New Gods to look forward to.
