We’re gonna go out on a limb and say most of the characters in the above image will not be in Zack Snyder’s forthcoming Justice League film, just announced over the weekend.
The Wall Street Journal of all places got the exclusive on this one. While we’re still waiting desperately to find out what the Man of Steel sequel will be called, it seems Warner Bros. didn’t want to wait until July to make this particular geeky announcement at San Diego Comic-Con.
Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman told TWSJ Snyder would be directing the Man of Steel sequel follow-up, a film based on DC Comics superhero team, the Justice League.
A script is still in development and Warner has not set a release date, though the movie is unlikely to come out before 2018. Mr. Silverman would not comment on what other heroes might join Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in the movie. However the studio has recently been casting the role of Cyborg, a half-robotic hero who is expected to have a cameo in “Batman vs. Superman” and then appear in “Justice League.”
Hey, at least they didn’t give him the Wonder Woman film.
Speaking of which, the article also briefly mentions the notion of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman getting her own film, but the wording just makes me laugh.
And while there are no plans yet for a “Justice League” spinoff featuring Ms. Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” Warner executives said they are warm to the idea.
“That is our hope,” said Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing. “With the right script, that could be viable. The world is ready for her.”
Should we throw them an extra blanket until they’re so hot on the idea they just have to do it?
No, he’s not the be-all, end-all of awesome female characters but I can’t help but daydream of Earth 2 where Joss Whedon got to make his Wonder Woman film and Warner Bros. got out in front of Marvel Entertainment on the superhero movie cash cow.
If Warner really wanted to get their superhero movie universe going, they should have done a Wonder Woman solo after Man of Steel, with Batman and other heroes making appearances in both, and then gone on to the Justice League film. At this rate we won’t see Wonder Woman film until 2020 at the earliest. That is seriously depressing.
What’s also depressing is this probably means we also won’t see any solo films from them featuring any number of DC’s fantastic diverse characters. We know Cyborg will be in the Justice League film but what about Green Lantern John Stewart, Vixen, or countless others? Warner isn’t saying at this point and frankly, the film is so far off, I’m sure they don’t even have a cast of characters set yet. However, TWSJ article also mentions these other projects:
Warner Bros. has several other movies in development unconnected to the Justice League that are based on DC superheroes and fantasy and crime titles from its Vertigo line of genre comics, said Mr. Silverman and Toby Emmerich, president of Warner’s New Line Cinema label. They include “Shazam,” “Metal Men,” “100 Bullets,” and “Fables.”
We also haven’t had an update on Guillermo del Toro’s magic Justice League film since last year around this time so who knows when that will see the light of day.
I’m not a Snyder-hater like many, but I’m not his biggest fan either. I liked Man of Steel but it would be nice to see something of substance on the sequel before Warner threw Justice League at his feet.
