Who Made the List for This Year’s Video Game Hall of Fame Finalists?
The National Museum of Play, the Strong, has assembled this year’s list of finalists for possible induction into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, to sit alongside the likes of Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Doom, and more. The 2017 list sports everything from Windows Solitaire to Halo, so odds are that you’ll find something on there to root for and maybe even wind up a little torn.
Past inductees—now up to 12 in total since the Hall of Fame’s start in 2015—have also featured a variety of modern and retro gems, with World of Warcraft, The Sims, and Grand Theft Auto III, sitting alongside the even more old school titles you’d expect. This year, things have gotten even more modern with the inclusion of Portal among the finalists, which are:
- Donkey Kong
- Final Fantasy VII
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Microsoft Windows Solitare
- Mortal Kombat
- Myst
- Pokemon Red and Green
- Portal
- Resident Evil
- Street Fighter II
- Tomb Raider
- Wii Sports
The Strong has a page up listing all the finalists and the reasoning behind their worthiness for such an honor, although I think I can already hear the sound of tons of Final Fantasy VI fans gearing up to argue with the (emphasis mine) “new levels of technical achievement and story development” in Final Fantasy VII‘s description.
Personal beef aside, every game on the list absolutely deserves to be in the Video Game Hall of Fame at some point. Only a few will make it this year, though, and we’ll find out which ones in a ceremony at The Strong on Thursday, May 4 at 10:30am EDT.
