Fifty Shades of Grey is the Fastest Selling R-Rated Movie in Fandango History
See, I took a screenshot of Fandango's front page and turned the saturation all the way down, it's a joke.
We’re now at the T-minus one month until the release of Fifty Shades of Grey (I know you’re all counting the days), and that means that tickets for the movie went up on Fandango for preorder recently. Want to hear how it’s doing?
Well, since becoming available on Sunday, Fifty Shades of Grey is now the fastest selling R-rated movie Fandango has ever offered tickets for. In six days it’s done better first-week sales than Sex and the City 2, Gone Girl, and The Hangover Part II and III. It’s also the biggest first week of sales for a movie that isn’t a sequel since The Hunger Games.
While I haven’t read the books, I have it on pretty good authority that they’re an inaccurate-at-best and dangerously-misleading-at-worst depiction of a wide variety of the aspects of kink and power-play, and it seems unlikely that the film will show signs of having made a good faith effort to improve the books’ skew. But I try to find the silver lining in any predominantly female driven project, and with a female author, a female director, and a female lead, let’ see what I can do.
Okay so maybe… after Fifty Shades of Grey, Hollywood will have been convinced by Magic Mike, Twilight, and Fifty Shades that there’s tons and tons of money in hiring women to create media that caters to the female gaze. And then maybe we’ll get a lady-led, lady-created franchise that avoids glorifying tacitly abusive relationships full of consent violations and obsessive, manipulative behavior that also makes millions of dollars and ushers in a new era of the “chick flick.”
Look, I just said I would try.
