Doctor Who show runner Steven Moffat discussed a few things we’re interested to know. But can we believe him?
The last we heard of Hobbit director Peter Jackson taking a crack at Doctor Who was Luther creator Neil Cross saying, ”Never say never.” But what did Moffat have to say when he was asked about the possibility at the Ad-Lib comedy event in Edinburgh recently?
“He’s serious about it. We talked at The Hobbit premiere – he just wants a Dalek. So we’ll give him a Dalek and he’ll direct an episode,” said Moffat. “I think he’d like to us to go to New Zealand. I think it’s entirely possible.”
Sounds promising.
A few other hot topics were broached during the Q&A, namely regeneration facts, Peter Capaldi’s accent, and Time Lady Romana. Here’s Digital Spy’s report on all three:
Host Frank Skinner asked: “Do you acknowledge the convention that The Doctor can only regenerate 12 times?”, to which Moffat simply replied: “Yes.”
Moffat also spoke about Peter Capaldi retaining his Scottish accent for the Twelfth Doctor, commenting: “I’d be very surprised if he didn’t [keep it].”
The showrunner revealed that “the door is open” for a return of The Doctor’s daughter, Jenny, while a return for Time Lady Romana was ruled out.
“I have actually given no thought at all to Romana,” he insisted. “The Time Lords are dead in my mind. They died.”
A big “ouch” to him not giving any thought to Romana, a potentially great storytelling opportunity, but I’m not very surprised. His answer on regenerations doesn’t really tell us much except that he acknowledges limitations have been a thing, but his reply about Capaldi’s accent reaffirms what he said to Doctor Who Magazine recentlyl, that the Scottish actor will likely be speaking in his native accent as the 12th Doctor.
