Ladies and gentlemen, Fin Fang Foom, who will certainly not be appearing in Syfy’s Bryan Singer helmed kaiju series, though he is a giant magic lizard from the Marvel universe that probably some X-Man has fought at, like, some point. He wears underpants.
Also, thank you, Pacific Rim, for making it so that I feel like I can use the word kaiju without making it a link to a Wikipedia article.
According to Deadline, Singer’s series will focus on the aftermath of a kaiju attack in a small Northern California community, and will go by the name Creature at Bay.
Creature At Bay is set in the wake of the US military taking down a giant, rampant creature — a modern-day “Kaiju” monster – just off the Northern California coast. A middle-management Undersecretary from the California Emergency Management Agency is charged with leading the clean-up efforts as the small town becomes the focus of the entire world.
It’s a concept that sounds like it keeps the core ideas of many good kaiju stories: that it’s the human characters and their reactions to the disaster that are going to be the heart of your story. Even if there isn’t a giant robot to be seen. While Syfy is interested in it as a series, for now they’re merely developing it as a ninety minute pilot script. All it takes is for that pilot to get made, and Sy-“Sharknado”-fy is almost certain to air it, whether or not they greenlight it for a full season.
