Welcome to the new Pull Wisely, TMSā video comic review series! Join me as I go in-depth into a new comic. We offer reviews, critiques, and all sorts of thinks and feels about a brand new issue every single weekā¦ when weāre not making silly jokes and puns about it. You know how things go around here at The Mary Sue.
This weekās issue is actually a trade paperback: Jem and the Holograms, Volume 1: Showtime from IDW. If you haven’t yet gotten on board the Jem train, now’s the perfect time with the first story arc finally collected in trade.
In addition to Jem and the Holograms, Volume 1: Showtime, here are our otherĀ Top 5 Comics Recommendations for the week:
- Lumberjanes Beyond Bay Leaf #1 (BOOM! Studios) Written by Faith Erin Hicks (with whom IĀ recently did an interview about her Buffy graphic novel). Art by newcomer Rosemary Valero-O’Connell! This is the first Lumberjanes special! So, definitely check this out if youāre a Lumberjanes fan.
- Two Brothers HC (Dark Horse) Graphic novel created by Brazillian twin brothers Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon. This is a gorgeous B&W adaptation of the novelĀ The Brothers by Brazilian author Milton Hatoum, which is the story of twin brothers with a complicated relationship – something Ba and Moon likely have some insight into!
- Twilight Children #1 (DC Comics) Written by Gilbert Hernandez. Art by Darwyn Cooke. Two great tastes that taste great together! Two amazing comics pros teaming up on a limited series that tells the story of what happens when a magical orb arrives in a Latin American fishing village. You wonāt want to miss this!
- Swords of Sorrow #6 (Dynamite) Written by Gail Simone. Art by Sergio Davila. This is the final issue of the pulp-tastic limited summer event. If youāve been keeping up with Swords of Sorrow, you’ll want to pick up this final installment. And if you havenāt, nowās the perfect time to get all six issues and read the entire story in one sitting!
- A-Force #5 (Marvel) Written by G. Willow Wilson. Art by Jorge Molina. The final chapter in the first arc of A-Force before the beginning of their continuing story as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe, which starts this week across their titles.
[NOTE: I was able to interview Ba and Moon AND Hernandez and Cooke at NYCC 2015, and both those interviews will be hitting TMS soon, so keep your eyes peeled!]
