Ever since Shaq told me to “forget” about the 16-bit 1994Â Shaq-Fu game — specifically, to “open your head, take it out, and throw it away” because the new crowd-funded Shaq-Fu will be “top of the line” — I’ve been curious. I’ve also been a little bit worried, because the original Shaq-Fu was —Â well, never mind, I’ve taken it out of my head and thrown it away, as per Shaq’s instructions.
The crowd-funding campaign for Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn didn’t break any funding records, but it did meet its goal — and now the designers are ready to share a taste of their early efforts with us. The first gameplay trailer, above, looks pretty good, if a bit narrative-heavy and sparse on action. The trailer tells the (very silly) story behind Shaq’s in-game portrayal of himself, as well as some brief snippets of the 2D beat-em-up stylings of the game. It looks fun, charming, and like it’s been crafted with love. I’ve seen some folks disappointed that this is a 2D beat-em-up instead of a 2D fighting game — but I don’t mind. It would’ve taken a lot more money to make a fighting game, for one thing.
If this trailer doesn’t restore your faith in Shaq-Fu, then perhaps this picture of Shaq preparing to do motion-capture for the game will do the trick?
