As grown-ups, some of us have more coloring books than we ever did as kids. From enchanted forests and Harry Potter to fanciful swear words and vulvas, every appetite can be satisfied in the pursuit of the much-lauded stress relief benefits that are to be found in a box of crayons and a trendy coloring book.
Despite the bevy of options available to coloring book aficionados, Chris-Rachael Oseland and Tom Gordon‘s recent release manages to be so much more than just another adult coloring book. Based on their wildly successful Illustrated Geek Cookbook, Oseland and Gordon have crafted a little bit of art therapy that no geeky colorist should be without.
Starting with the 1867 birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s infamously arrogant detective, The Kitchen Overlord’s Colorable Compendium of Geek History invites amateur artists to illuminate scenes from some of our favorite video games, science fiction novels, films, and television series. Across more than 50 images, Gordon and Oseland take us through some the most memorable moments in a long and illustrious history of nerdy worlds and characters.
It’s well worth noting that each of Gordon’s lusciously detailed illustrations is accompanied by a sharp-witted historical notation by Oseland who shares succinct info-bites about the selected epochs in this compendium of geek history.
Not limiting herself to coloring books or illustrated cookbooks, Oseland is the ultimate architect of geek-related print products. Included in her oeuvre are Hobbit and Whovian cookbooks, while her steampunk cocktail recipes are not to be missed; this creator is worth keeping an eye on.
If you’re ready to unite your obsession with all things geek and the benefits of coloring, then slap your nerd bucks down on this gloriously illustrated anthology and brush up on your geek history while you’re at it. If you want a little taste, hop over to Kitchen Overlord and snag one of her free coloring pages and print out her recipe for Sandworm Spice Bread, because who doesn’t love Dune-inspired yeast products?!
