Tegan and Sara are back at it again with a brand new video for their brand new song, “Boyfriend”. It’s a fun meta video about making a music video, and it’s great because it’s got references to a couple of their own older videos as well (“Closer” for starters). As well, there are more than a few guest stars and cameos in the video. As Vulture points out, Mae Whitman, Rachel Antonoff, and Clea DuVall all make appearances, with Antonoff playing an exasperated music video director who just can’t seem to settle on whether she wants kittens, kids jumping rope, puppies, or balloon-framed flirting to be the centerpiece of her video.
Of course, while all this chaos is going on, you’ve got Tegan and Sara just doing their thing and looking as fierce as ever. Ugh. Sorry. Crushing so hard right now. Listen, if you’re a Tegan and Sara fan like I am, then you should totally check this video out. If you’re not, then here’s your chance to jump on board the fan wagon (yes, I know it’s supposed to be bandwagon, but go with it here). “Boyfriend” is as catchy a hit as they come, and is trademark Tegan and Sara. It’s an earworm that you’ll find yourself hopping along to and singing to yourself when you least expect it, so let this be your warning now, then.
The content of the song is quite resonant, especially for folks who may have found themselves in that weird grey area between friend and partner. Sure, there’s space for strong platonic friend love but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask about what y’all are, right? Sometimes you just want to know, you know? So standing up and asking instead of letting them “take advantage cause it felt so good” might very well be a good thing to do for yourself. And, at the end of the day, you don’t want to be someone else’s secret, so you call them out on it. At least, that’s what I think the song’s about.
What do you think?
