Last month, we learned that Hemlock Grove‘s Bill Skarsgard would play Pennywise the Clown in New Line’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It, and now Entertainment Weekly has the first exclusive look at Skarsgard as the terror of Derry, Maine.

Sarksgard told EW that the Andy Muschietti-directed movie is deliberately aiming for a less “greasy” Pennywise than the one played by Tim Curry in the 1990 miniseries (pictured above), saying of the role, “It’s such an extreme character. Inhumane. It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates […] It truly enjoys the shape of the clown Pennywise, and enjoys the game and the hunt. What’s funny to this evil entity might not be funny to everyone else. But he thinks it’s funny.”

You can take a look at Skarsgard-Pennywise for yourself, below. Personally I think the ruffled collar is a little hilarious in this picture—he looks more like Evil Undead Shakespeare than Pennywise—but that’s probably just the angle of the image. What do you think of It? Ready to terrify a new generation of flesh to feast upon kids?
