Hayley Atwell may not be returning to Agent Carter any time soon (though she’s open to doing a movie), but that doesn’t mean she’s stepping away from television altogether. In the upcoming ABC drama Conviction, which is airing early next week, Atwell plays a former (and fictional) First Daughter named Hayes Morrison who rather reluctantly teams up with the Conviction Integrity Unit, a group that examines cases for potential wrongful convictions.

In developing the character of Hayes, Atwell told Entertainment Weekly that she looked to real-life examples of former First Daughters–including Chelsea Clinton herself: “I’ve been keeping up to date with what’s happening in the political climate, especially with thrillingly, amazingly having a woman leading a party at the moment, and then watching Chelsea Clinton and how she comes across.”

While Atwell’s Hayes is definitely not a squeaky-clean character–she gets blackmailed into helping the Conviction Integrity Unit after being busted for cocaine possession–Atwell says she enjoys playing a character who has her issues: “She has tensions and demons that leak out in other areas, mainly in her personal life, but at work that’s where she excels, so she can be on fire there. She also knows that she can’t get fired… I think it’s really fun to play.”

If you miss having Hayley Atwell on your TV as much as we have, Conviction airs on ABC this Monday, October 3 at 10 p.m. EST.
