In the wake of director Colin Trevorrow leaving Star Wars: Episode IX and the ensuing speculation about his replacement, Stephen Colbert put forward an unusual suggestion for the new director: Werner Herzog. In the parody trailer above, Colbert imagines how Herzog might describe his take on the galaxy far, far away. (The trailer itself starts at around the 2:15 mark in the video.)

This parody is a pretty spot-on take on Herzog’s signature narration. “The evil First Order seeks control of the galaxy,” says the voiceover, “forgetting that the galaxy itself is naught but the infinite void.” The rest of the trailer contains plenty of other choice quotes, such as, “The searing cut of the lightsaber cannot compare to the unfeeling violence of our endless universe.” Even the title is oh-so-Herzog: “Star Wars Episode IX: Why do we need a subtitle when 100 years from now, each of us will be dead, buried in the cold, dark ground?”

I’m always a sucker for Herzog parodies, like this Ant-Man one from 2015, or this video of “Herzog” reading Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, and Colbert’s Star Wars joke was no exception.
