I still haven’t watched the pilot episode for Amy Sherman-Palladino’s new Amazon show, even though it’s been available online for months. This trailer (which is NSFW due to a whole lot of beautiful cursing) has made me realize what a regretful oversight that was on my part.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows a similar thematic pattern as Gilmore Girls and Palladino’s disgracefully underrated Bunheads, of a woman walking away from or otherwise losing a potentially idyllic life and finding support in other badass women. Except here, the main character drops as many f-bombs as Palladino herself. (If you’ve never seen her interviews, that’s a lot.)
House of Cards’ Rachel Brosnahan stars as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1950s Jewish woman with the perfect Upper West Side life, whose husband leaves her and their young children to go find himself or whatever. A public rant catches the eye of Palladino fave Alex Borstein, and suddenly Mrs. Maisel is on the path to being the female Lenny Bruce, smashing the patriarchy with expletive-filled comedy. Tony Shaloub and Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Zegen also star as Midge’s father and husband, respectively.
Amazon ordered two full seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so clearly they have confidence in its success. It probably helped that the pilot drew an audience rating of 4.8/5. The episode currently has more than 8,000 reviews, 93% of which are 5-stars. When Amazon launches their online pilot seasons, customer feedback reportedly plays heavily into which shows get picked up.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will stream on Amazon starting November 29th, but the first episode is still available for Prime members.
