Netflix is investing big time in its Regency-era series Bridgerton by renewing the series for seasons 3 and 4. The news comes just as production for season 2 is underway, with Anthony Bridgerton as the focus. And in true Bridgerton fashion, the Shondaland show announced the renewal via Lady Whistledown.

“It seems we have a rather special announcement. Bridgerton shall return for seasons three and four. This author shall have to purchase more ink…” Lady Whistledown reported.

In a statement given to Deadline, powerhouse Shonda Rhimes said,

“From the first time I read Julia Quinn’s delicious Bridgerton series, I knew these were stories that would captivate a viewing audience. But the evolution of this adaptation would not be a success without the many significant contributions of the entire Shondaland team.”

Rhimes went on to explain that the vote of confidence in their work on Bridgerton feels incredible. She was thankful for the partner they have in Netflix, and she is thrilled for the opportunity to continue building on this world and bringing us the stories of the Bridgertons.

Bela Bajaria, vice president of global television at Netflix also went on to say:

“The creative team, led by Shonda [Rhimes], knew the material and delivered a beautiful, emotional, romantic drama for our members. They have some exciting plans for the future, and we think audiences will continue to swoon for this show. We’re planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come.”

These early renewals are absolutely due to the success of season 1 of Bridgerton. The Regency-era drama was watched by a record 82 million households around the world, and the series is based on the already widely popular romance series by Julia Quinn.

News of the renewal of seasons 3 and 4 comes days after season one star Regé-Jean Page confirmed that he would no longer be returning to Bridgerton. And while we’re sad to see him go, we’re excited about his future and what’s to come next for Daphne, the rest of the Bridgerton cast, and the new characters we have yet to meet.
