The Trailer Is Out for Abigail Breslin’s Final Girl, One of Three Final Girl-Themed Movies In Development

Not sure if want.

We are living in a golden age of final girl movies. There’s ABC Family’s The Final Girls, co-starring the OG Jamie Lee Curtis. There’s the The Final Girls, starring Taissa Farmiga and Malin Ackerman as a mother-daughter duo trapped in an ’80s slasher flick. And now there’s Final Girl, the directorial debut of fashion photographer Tyler Shields, in which Abigail Breslin is an assassin-in-training whose final exam is turning the tables on a group of men (led by Vikings‘ Alexander Ludwig) that kills girls for sport.

I agree with Indiewire that it doesn’t look that great, quality-wise, but hell, I’ll watch 90 minutes of Abigail Breslin hunting things. There’s something about the sudden glut of final girls movies that bugs me in the abstract, though. I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but… Hollywood, you know “violent ass-kicker” isn’t the only type of strong female character there is, right? Maybe you feel you can pat yourself on the back for being “progressive” by having a petite blonde women beat dudes up, but it’s not the early ’90s anymore. Buffy has been done. Not that there’s anything wrong with the “female action hero,” and not that I don’t want her to star in more films (*cough*BlackWidow*cough*), but… I guess I’m just a bit cynical. Let’s sstop fetishizing one character type and get some variety up in here, OK?
