Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Invites 322 New Members in Push for Diversity

Drop in the bucket or ripple that becomes a flood?

Hollywood has been futzin’ up pretty bad lately. There’s no arguing that at all. But maybe, just maybe, this new class of invitees to the Academy can be the first sign that the film industry’s values are changing. Too hopeful? Maybe. Probably. Okay, yeah.

But change does begin with one step, and sometimes that step looks like Emma Stone, Justin Lin, Rosamund Pike, or Choi Min-sik.

Pajiba highlighted many of the 322 invitees who include those mentioned above as well as David Oyelowo, Dev Patel, Elizabeth Banks, Niki Caro (who directed Whale Rider, one of our suggested films for growing feminists!), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. These actors, actresses, directors, writers, composers, all of them, they’re small in number compared to the current overwhelmingly white male Academy.

But still. Here’s hoping things get better. Representation matters, folks.
