The Powerful Reason Actresses Will Be Wearing Black This Red Carpet Season

Recommended Videos

We’ll be seeing a lot of black suits and dresses on the red carpet this year, and not just because it’s a flattering color. The Hollywood Reporter writes that actresses will be donning black this season in support of #MeToo and the recent revelations around sexual harassment (recent perhaps only because it has hit famous men, but inarguably impactful nonetheless).

This protest of gender inequality will start on January 7th with the Golden Globes. Clothing is always a talking point at award shows, and while there’s nothing wrong with appreciating or enjoying gowns, it’s undeniable that red carpet questions are incredibly gendered. This was the premise of #AskHerMore, which aimed to ask women about their ambitions, projects, and more. Many participants wore ribbons or pins at the Oscars last year, which allowed them to speak about issues like free speech and organizations like Planned Parenthood or the ACLU.

While I would much rather these awards and events un-invite or write out alleged predators/harassers altogether (remember: Casey Affleck will be presenting the Best Actress Oscar), I’m glad that this collective act will keep the momentum going and remind us that this problem continues and we can’t look away.
