Adele Is Back With “Hello,” A Haunting Post-Break-Up Ballad From 25

Recommended Videos

Adele’s years-long hiatus is officially over, with her much-anticipated upcoming album 25 out this November 20th. As of today, you can listen to her first single from that album, titled “Hello,” and watch the heart-wrenching accompanying video. I’ve been listening to it all morning; this is my favorite type of Adele song, sort of a spiritual successor to the equally poignant “Someone Like You,” with a similar vibe and style.

The video, directed by Xavier Dolan, is as beautiful as the song — not only because it features Adele’s gorgeous winged eyeliner and also Mack Wilds as the love interest, but also because of its use of different old furniture and telephone designs from over the years as background artistic objects. Also, seems like the melodic lilt of Adele’s opening line is an intentional reference to Lionel Richie’s song of the same title — and, of course, there’s that lyrical reference to California Dreamin’. There might be some other references I didn’t catch; I’ll let you know after I’ve listened to it another dozen times or so.
