Peggy Carter’s Getting Her Own ABC Show in Marvel’s Agent Carter
Whatever color my lips and nails were before, they are red in this moment.
Your prayers have been answered, fellow feminist comic book history nerds. Peggy Carter, the badass British agent who melted Steve Rogers’ heart (though not the Arctic ice he got trapped in, sadly) and founded S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 1940s, is finally getting her own TV series.
Though rumors of the show’s development have been circulating for at least six months, this is the first official confirmation anyone’s gotten from a stateside news source, namely Marvel itself. But it was worth the wait, of course—especially given that this is a straight-to-series order from ABC, and that they’re also renewing Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D for a second season as well.
Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Carter for the show, which according to the series’ official description, will find her “marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad” in 1946. “Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life—Steve Rogers. ”
So is it going to be like that scene in Captain America: The First Avenger where one of the recruits tries to make fun of her for being a woman and she punches him in his stupid face? Because I could and will watch 22 episodes of that. I probably won’t, because according to THR, it’ll only be a “short-order series” meant to bridge the gap left by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D‘s season hiatus, but a girl can dream, right?
While it’s unclear whether or not Dominic Cooper will also be returning as Howart Stark, the series appears to be in capable creative hands. Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas (from Resurrection and Reaper) have signed on as showrunners, and script writers Steve McFeely, Christopher Marcus, Jeffrey Bell, and Jeph Loeb will executive produce.
Still not convinced that this is awesome news? Here, watch a clip from the 2013 one-shot Agent Carter, which appeared on the Iron Man 3 DVD. That’ll be sure to get you all fist-pumpingly excited.
