Agent Stone Pining After Robotnik Is Even More Obvious in ‘Sonic 2’
He'll always put Austrian goat milk in the doctor's latte.
Slight spoilers to Sonic 2
After the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, some fans noticed a bit of chemistry between Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) and the man he lovingly worked for, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Clearly, from that Valentine’s Day tweet from the official movie account, shippers weren’t the only ones who felt a latte love in the air, or, at the very least, a one-sided dedication to a quirky boss who treated you poorly, but you’re so into him that you perfect his favorite drink.
Like. Agent Stone is there to translate Robotnik when he displays an intelligence level that the military can’t understand. He checks on him first (when he knows he should be pursuing the target) and there’s even a part where Robotnik tells Stone to pin himself against the wall so he can lean in and give him a stern lecture. The fics just write themselves.
At the end of the first film, these two are separated from each other, but with Robotnik returning in Sonic 2, he gets the chance to reunite with his loyal subordinate.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Agent Stone is absolutely miserable without Robotnik. Now seen at a coffee shop that’s a nod to the video game Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, he spends his days wondering where his boss is. You know you got it bad for someone when you go from evil subordinate to coffee shop barista just so you can keep making the drink they used to like. While no one in the movie is asking for their coffee to have Austrian goat milk in it, shippers are sure to appreciate the sentiment, as it shows that this is a man who can’t live his life without his doctor.
No one should be surprised at how thrilled Agent Stone is about having Robotnik back, so the real question is whether or not Robotnik reciprocates his feelings. The answer is… kinda? Like, a teeny tiny bit?
Perhaps it’s not as one-sided as it seems
Before even getting to their reunion it’s important to note that during the post-credits scene in the first movie, we see Robotnik trying to make sense of the planet he’s now stranded on. He’s shaved his head. His mustache has gotten more magnificent. And despite spending so much time belittling his subordinate, he clearly misses his company, as he’s gotten himself a new companion named “Agent Stone” who is, literally, a stone.
So maybe he’s more fond of the man that he’s led us to believe? Perhaps he’s not aware of how much Agent Stone means to him? Or maybe it’s just a cute pun, either way, it’s good fuel for fics and fanart. One-sided workplace crush or mutual affection with a boss who expresses himself through insulting his lover? I’ll let you decide.
Their reunion goes about how you expect, with Agent Stone full of fast-beating heart eyes and Robotnik focused on his plans, but I’d like to believe that he’s enjoying how emotional Agent Stone gets when he sees him walk through that door. If nothing else, Robotnik’s eating up the attention he hasn’t been the center of for a while, and Agent Stone is more than happy to fawn over him. Where that leads these two is a pretty spectacular adventure and one that has the potential to get even more interesting depending on where the third film goes from here. Until then, see everyone on AO3!
