Alyson Hannigan to Star in Matt Damon/Ben Affleck CBS Pilot
Once More With Feeling
Hardworking Alyson Hannigan has already lined up a post-How I Met Your Mother job as one of the leads in a pilot produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The show is titled More Time With Family and will also star Tom Papa, who worked with Damon on the movie The Informant. It’s a pilot for CBS with 20th Century Fox Television, which are both involved with HIMYM as well. Seems like a good deal, right? Well, let’s hope the show is better than its description.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the show like this:
Hannigan will co-star opposite Tom Papa in the multicamera comedy about a husband and father (Papa) who makes a career change in order to spend more time with his family. The actress will play Cindy Rizzo, Tom’s wife, who is described as an amazing mother who runs the house like a drill sergeant and has endless energy. She’s tasked with trying to teach Tom how to handle the family.
The way that reads to me is “generic family sitcom with hilarity about how bad dads are at helping around the house!” But, to be fair, it could be a good show – after all, Affleck and Damon are pretty smart dudes and we can always hope they want to do something interesting with this kind of plot.
The fascinating and impressive thing to me is that over the last 20 years, Hannigan has worked so incredibly consistently. Sure, she’s done movies including the successful American Pie movies, but more impressively, for 16 of the last 20 years she’s been a lead actress on a successful TV show between HIMYM and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In between she also guest starred on Veronica Mars which makes her extra awesome in my book. It’s an impressive feat for an actress that started off as the mousy best friend on Buffy and then became so much more over the course of the show. While the quality of HIMYM has certainly been, shall we say, on the downslide recently, Hannigan remains generally delightful.
It’d be great to continue to see her on TV and hopefully this pilot turns out to be more nuanced than it seems. Otherwise, we can always hope it doesn’t get picked up and she finds somethingamazing to act in.
