Things We Saw Today: Amazon Prime Makes a Play for the Superhero Space with The Boys Teaser
Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic is set to hit the streaming network.
NYCC has given us our first look at The Boys, the new “anti-superhero” superhero show based on the comic book series from Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan). The series takes place in a world where superheroes exist, but they are beholden to the all-powerful Vought International, a company run by Madelyn Stillwell (Elizabeth Shue), the Vice President of Hero Management. But the heroes, known as “The Seven”, who work for Vought are corrupt and reckless celebrities, so it falls on a ragtag CIA black ops team, “the boys” to keep them in check.
The series, developed by Eric Kripke (Supernatural), Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, stars Karl Urban (Star Trek) as “The Boys” leader Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie (The Hunger Games), and Karen Fukuhara as The Female (Suicide Squad). Simon Pegg also joins the series as Hughie’s dad, in a fun bit of stunt casting (Hughie’s look in the comics was based on Pegg).
The Boys drops in 2019 and joins the ranks of Amazon’s The Tick as an irreverent take on superheroes.
