Charlize Theron To Star in Netflix’s Survival Thriller ‘Apex’
Described as a cross between Silence of the Lambs and Free Solo (per Deadline), Charlize Theron is set to headline Netflix’s new project, Apex.
Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur is in talks to direct the project, with Jeremy Robbins penning the script for the thriller flick. While not much is known about the plot, the gist suggests that the film will follow a rock climber who ends up getting hunted in the wild. Since the film is in the pre-production stage currently, it is fair to assume that it won’t be available to stream before 2025, at the very least.
Theron is attached to the project as a producer, as is Kormákur. Apex will be Theron’s fourth film with the streaming giant, following the superhero film Old Guard, the fantasy drama The School for Good and Evil, and the upcoming sequel, Old Guard 2.
Netflix acquired the script for Apex back in February 2024 and lucked out massively as they managed to land both their first-choice lead star and director in Theron and Kormákur. In an era dominated by franchise films, Apex comes across as a refreshing project where the studio is showing faith in the script, coming on board before key details like the cast and director are confirmed.
Kormákur’s versatile film catalog dates back to 1996, when he wrote and directed his first movie, Go LazyTown. Since then, the actor-director has mainly delved into the action and survival adventure genre, with some of his popular works including the 2012 Icelandic survival drama The Deep, which was the country’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar that year, and major Hollywood productions like Contraband, 2 Guns, and Everest.
Like Theron, the Icelandic director is no stranger to working with Netflix, having collaborated on the 2021 mystery-drama series Katla. An eight-episode limited series, the show premiered on the streamer in June 2021 to mostly positive reviews.
