Babymetal Will Reign in a New Warner Bros. Web Series Blending Animation & Live-Action
Babymetal’s meteoric rise to stardom continues, with their next project entering the world of animated entertainment. The Japanese metal band, featuring a trio of tutu-clad gals singing peppy melodies alongside the sick licks of a totally bad-ass live backing band, already has a massive international fandom. So, Warner Bros. Animation has decided to take advantage of the band’s cachet by making a new animated TV show about them.
Babymetal’s show will be a web series, put together by Blue Ribbon Content and Amuse USA, and it’ll feature both live-action segments as well as animation. It sounds like the show is going to revolve around a fictional (OR IS IT) depiction of the bandmates’ careers and lives. Nerdist described the show as follows:
The girls will be playing themselves as they travel (via a portal, of course) back and forth from the animated realm that embodies the magic of heavy metal itself. In this incarnation, Moametal, Su-metal, and Yuimetal are a “warrior band” who have been called together by the god, Kitsune, to defend heavy metal from dark forces.
Babymetal already has a quickly-growing fanbase here in the United States (they guested on The Late Show last April, but even by then, tons of people here had already heard about them). This show hopes to capture the hearts of existing fans while also getting even more eyes (and ears) on their awesome, genre-fusing style. Warner Bros. Animation President Sam Register put it this way: “Babymetal have to be seen to be believed. We are huge fans here at Blue Ribbon Content and are extremely excited to help bring the Babymetal phenomenon to U.S. audiences through this upcoming digital series.”
In case you haven’t heard Babymetal yet, please enjoy the official music video for their delightful single, “Gimme Chocolate.” It’s got a hardcore instrumental intro, but then when the lyrics come in, they’re totally peppy. It’s pop music meets metal music, and it just has to be heard for you to get it:
As far as genre fusions go, this one is a personal fave of mine. I’m totally psyched to see the band cross yet another genre into the world of animation. It sounds like a fun way for them to promote their sound!
