Back to the Future II Concept Art Reveals More 2015 Gadgets We Still Don’t Have

And we thought hoverboard envy was bad.

Once upon a time, Back to the Future writer/director Robert Zemeckis decided that hoverboard lust was enough of a burden to place on the audience of Part II, so he cut a bunch of amazing future tech from the movie. Well it’s 2015, and Marty McFly’s future is finally here! …In pictures, anyway. The movie’s “future consultant” has revealed some concept art of other gadgets we would’ve been salivating over since the late 80s if they’d made it to the screen.

Unlike the Internet, future consultant Tim Flattery had completely forgotten that the year he’d been asked to dream up back in 1988 had finally arrived. He told Newsweek, “I totally forgot that it took place in 2015, and once I started seeing all the stuff on the Internet about it, I went, ‘Oh yeah, of course!'” Too bad he didn’t fall for all the Internet’s fake “It’s the year of Marty McFly’s future!” posts and give us this art sooner.

He and concept artist Edward Eyth invented a whole lot of future gadgets—some of which you’ll recognize from the movie, but some that you’ve never seen before.

You can see even more on Eyth’s own website. He said that some of the more fanciful ideas were cut from Marty’s middle class lifestyle, but he was also “highly motivated to make it so we didn’t look like fools in 25 years. We knew that when we see movies like Metropolis, when they’re speculating about the future, it can be so far off. We weren’t that far off, I guess, on a number of occasions.”

Yeah. At least we won’t have to tie our own shoes much longer, right Nike?
