A Bad Moms Sequel Is Coming for More Nuanced Moms in Drunken Shenanigans

Whenever you see mothers in film or television, they’re usually the “sensible,” “responsible” ones who keep male protagonists from having a good time, which is what makes a movie like Bad Moms so necessary. With one hit out of the way, screenwriters Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are delivering the holiday gift of a Bad Moms 2.

Star Kristen Bell made the announcement on her Twitter with the funny piece of media above. The original Bad Moms, though a relatively low-budget film (starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, Kathryn Hahn, and Jada Pinkett Smith), became the surprise hit of the summer this year and earned more than $179 milliion worldwide. Though actually, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that a film like this was such a success. Women who generally take their kids to movies were seeing this one in droves, identifying with the main characters, who feel pressure to be perfect mothers even as they feel pressure surrounding working vs. not working.

In the usual feminist conversations surrounding “having it all,” there’s often very little room for failure and making mistakes, lest a woman seem “weak” or incapable of handling difficult things like equality. What Bad Moms does is say, “This shit is hard, and you will make mistakes, but you don’t have to be perfect to deserve happiness or to live the life you want.”

According to Movies.com, while they’d love to just keep making these movies in an endless franchise forever, Lucas says, “Our goal right now, first and foremost, is to make Bad Moms 2. To find out a way to get the sequel off the ground, because we had such a great experience making the movie.” They’ll also be introducing new characters into the sequel, which is titled A Bad Moms Christmas.

Here’s hoping that this sequel is a lot better than Lucas and Moore’s Hangover 2! We’ll have to wait until next year to find out. A Bad Moms Christmas is set for theatrical release on November 3, 2017.
