Batwoman fans have reason to rejoice today! DC Comics has announced that Kate Kane will be returning to her own ongoing comic in early 2017!
The super-talented (and very busy!) Marguerite Bennett will be writing the new title with Steve Epting returning to DC Comics for the first time in fifteen years to do the art. It’ll all start in January in Detective Comics, where Bennett will be co-writing a two-issue story with James Tynion IV, appropriately titled “Batwoman Begins.” Batwoman’s solo story begins in February with a one-shot setting everything up, and the title officially begins in March with Batwoman #1. (Tynion IV will also co-write the first Batwoman arc.)
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Bennett expressed in a statement how thrilled she is to be working with this character. She says, “There has never been a heroine I have loved more than Batwoman. Her flaws, her ferocity, her struggle to rise above her own history and find a way to serve the greater good and those she loves—she’s always cut me straight to the bone. To be a queer woman and to see a queer woman as not just a part but a pillar of the Bat-family was life changing, inspiring and gave me the courage to pursue this career in comics. The opportunity to add to Kate Kane’s story and legacy is both an honor and a sincere dream come true.”
Meanwhile, Epting can’t wait to draw the heck out of Batwoman, saying, “I am very excited for the opportunity to work on Batwoman. I love the character design and how she fits into the whole Batman mythos, and I’m looking forward to the artistic opportunities the story will provide. Batwoman has a rich visual history and I’m thrilled to be a part of it!”
With Wonder Woman having been confirmed as queer, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy totally being A Thing, and Bennett taking over writing duties on Batwoman, here’s hoping for more actual, explicit representation of female queerness in the DCU.
