Which Being Human Star Might’ve Been Starring In Doctor Who Right Now?

Who, in an alternate universe, is gallivanting around in the (prop) TARDIS at this very moment? That would be…

Russell Tovey, who played the adorable and occasionally squeaky-voiced werewolf George. He also had a memorable role in the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special (the one with the space Titanic) as Midshipman Alonso Frame. Then-showrunner Russell T. Davies liked Tovey so much that he mentioned in a blog post that the actor would make a great Doctor. Then, said Tovey to The Independent, things took on a life of their own:

“Russell texted me to say, ‘Look, I’ve said this quote about how you should be the next Doctor Who, so if it goes a bit crazy …’ And I was, ‘Oh, that’s fine …’, and then suddenly it just went everywhere: people messaging me from my childhood and lots of remarks like, ‘His ears are too big for the Tardis, they’ll be flapping about.’ People were starting to get really personal.”

“His ears are too big for the TARDIS?” Two words: Christopher. Eccleston. Obviously Tovey didn’t get the role, which he’s actually a bit relieved over, saying “It would have terrified me. I don’t know what I would have done with all the attention.”

How about you? Would you have liked to see Tovey as the Doctor? I liked him in Being Human and The History Boys, so you’d hear no complains from me, but if I were going to replace Matt Smith with a Being Human vet it’d have to be Lenora Crichlow, who played Annie. She had the chipper-but-also-emotionally-tormented thing down pat. Actually, I am going to send vibes out into the universe for her to be Twelve. Can’t hurt to dream, can it?
