Ben Affleck Discusses Batman & Daredevil While Amy Adams Discusses Wonder Woman
Holy Rusted Metal Batman!
I’ve mentioned before I’m not keen on Ben Affleck playing Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, but I’m keeping my hopes up it will turn out well. While the actor can’t really give specifics on the film, he’s been getting asked a lot about it in interviews and a new one has him not only discussing the Dark Knight and Zack Snyder’s approach, but his past superhero work as well. Hit the jump for his thoughts, plus what Amy Adams had to say when she was asked about the recent Wonder Woman casting.
Affleck was interviewed by Playboy for their 60th anniversary issue where, among other things, the topic of Batman was broached.
“When they asked if I would be Batman, I told them I didn’t see myself in the role and I was going to have to beg off. They said I’d fit well into how they were going to approach the character and asked me to look at what the writer-director, Zack Snyder, was doing. The stuff was incredible,” he told them. “It was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology. It made me excited. All of a sudden I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now or even than it did to me initially.”
To be honest, that’s kind of what I’m hoping for, that it will make sense once I see it. Affleck also describes his version of the iconic character as, “an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill’s Superman character.”
And although he’s commented on the fan/internet reaction before, he touched on it again with Playboy. “I understand I’m at a disadvantage with the internet. If I thought the result would be another Daredevil, I’d be out there picketing myself. [laughs] Why would I make the movie if I didn’t think it was going to be good and that I could be good in it?”
Of course that begs the question, did Affleck not think Daredevil was going to be good and that he would be good in it? You could say the same about Gigli or any other flop in history. Presumably every actor thinks the movie roles they accept are going to be good, otherwise, why make them? (barring contractual obligations, etc)
Of course Affleck thought Daredevil would be good. He said as much to Playboy, “The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil. It just kills me. I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got fucked up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that’s part of the motivation to do Batman.”
So I can’t take Affleck’s word on this part at least. Yes, he thinks it’s going to be good, that he’s going to be good, but that doesn’t mean he’s right. There are a thousand other factors at work.
Now that the big Wonder Woman news is out, interviewers are starting to ask the stars of Man of Steel about it. The Playboy interview took place earlier so it couldn’t be posed to Affleck yet but when it comes to Wonder Woman, it seems our new Lois is out of the loop. Here’s what Adams had to say when Collider asked her to comment:
