Actor Ben Foster Reveals His Role In The Warcraft Movie

Ishnu’alah, dear readers. The Warcraft movie wrapped up shooting last week, but it’s got another twenty months of post-production ahead. The plot is still shrouded in mystery, though we do know that it will focus on the first contact between orcs and humans. As of yesterday, we’ve got a confirmed actor/character pairing, thanks to an IGN interview with Ben Foster. And yeah, it’s one of the big names.

Possible spoilers, though very small ones.

From IGN:

The character in Warcraft that I play is named Medivh. He’s a mage, which is essentially a sorcerer…He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle.

That sounds a bit different than the Medivh backstory I know, but I’m cool with a new twist on the First War. Foster never mentions orcs and humans specifically, but does say that the movie doesn’t pick favorites.

It shows both sides of a conflict, which is exciting to me. It’s not just a video game turned into a movie. It’s asking, hopefully, an important question of, where do we limit our compassion for what we consider to be the bad guys?

Warcraft is slated for release in March 2016. Reportedly, footage from the film will be shown at SDCC this year. In the meantime, join me on a trip down memory lane. I’d like to share the imagery that went through my head the second I read the name “Medivh.”
