Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie Is Writing A Labyrinth-esque Fairy Tale Musical
DO WANT
You might know Bret McKenzie as one half of the Kiwi musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, or as the guy who wrote the Oscar-winning soundtrack for The Muppets, or even as Figwit from The Lord of the Rings. But you probably don’t know him like this: McKenzie is writing what he describes as a “fairy-tale comedy musical” that pulls inspiration from The Muppets, The Princess Bride, and Labyrinth.
It sounds awesome. So what’s the sitch with the musical’s development? Head under the cut to find out!
McKenzie is currently doing press for Austenland, but he mentioned this side project in an interview. With a description like that, who wouldn’t want to know more?
He had this to say to Collider about his project:
I’m in the middle of a script for a kind of—it hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that. I’m developing and that script’s halfway through. James Bobin [co-writer and director of The Muppets] is helping me. I’m the official writer but we’re developing it. I want to make a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff. [It’s] live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.
Considering his impressive success with The Muppets (and his continued composer position in Muppets Most Wanted) he’s got no shortage of experience and resources to make this happen.
If anyone can pull this off, it’s McKenzie. He’s a muppet of a man.
