The Captain Marvel Movie Will Be a ’90s Throwback Where She Fights the Skrulls

To compensate for cruelly playing Black Panther footage but not releasing it online for the rest of us, Marvel also shared some Captain Marvel information and concept art at their San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) panel yesterday. We found out that Carol Danvers will take on the Skrulls in her debut film, which is going to be set in…the ’90s!

What’s more, Samuel L. Jackson will co-star in the film as a pre-eyepatch Nick Fury, so we may finally find out how MCU Fury lost one of his eyes.

As Collider points out, this would make Captain Marvel the first MCU movie since Captain America: The First Avenger that isn’t set in the present day. It also allows Carol to have her debut without needing to address or interact with the Avengers apparatus that Tony Stark has set up in the present day. The 1990s were also a tough time for women in the U.S. military; they still weren’t allowed to apply for combat roles in most branches, our national conversation around sexual assault was even more dismal than it is today, and the U.S. was dealing with the many controversies of the Gulf War. It’ll make an interesting setting given Carol’s background.

Honestly, I also love the idea of a ’90s period piece, because it hopefully means we get to see a short-haired Carol walking around in flannel and ripped jeans and punching things. Queerbait me, Marvel, I’m ready.

At their panel, Marvel also shared some of the movie’s concept art, from Thor: Ragnarok and Ant-Man & The Wasp concept artist Andy Park. It looks pretty gorgeous, and Brie Larson’s costume draws very clearly from the Jamie McKelvie redesign in the comics.

As for the Skrulls, speaking to the press after the panel, Kevin Feige said, “There’s an entire section of our comics that deal with the Kree/Skrull War, and we haven’t tapped into that at all. And we thought that would be an amazing, huge portion of mythology to belong to Captain Marvel.”

Of course, the news about the shape-shifting Skrulls also had fans speculating about the possibilities. Has one of our beloved heroes been a Skrull all along??

For me, however, the pressing question that arises is…the soundtrack! Are we going Spice Girls? Grunge? ’90s hip hop? There are no bad choices.
