Captain Marvel’s Soundtrack Demonstrates the Power of a Good Girl Power Ballad
We've had it up to here.
When Carol Danvers had to take on a whole flock of men and women, we knew she could do it because she had the power of Gwen Stefani and No Doubt singing “Just a Girl” behind her. While Captain Marvel is a movie that made a lot of us feel as if we can take on the world, a good part of that was because the film had a soundtrack made for the girl power lover in all of us.
So, what is the power of a good girl power song? In the movie, Carol is facing off against foes who can rival her power, ready to take them on in the only way she knows how, and the song serves to get the audience ready and on her side. (Sure, we already were on her side, but come on, No Doubt? We’re in!).
The soundtrack throughout the movie is filled with ’90s classics and songs that many of us grew up listening to and feeling empowered by. Also … WATERFALLS?? But it brings up the important aspect of a girl power playlist. There’s something so empowering about listening to a song that tells women we can do anything with a great beat.
Pair that with watching Carol Danvers take on the world, and it’s an unstoppable team. Maybe it’s the ’90s kid in me that absolutely loved Captain Marvel, but there was something that just took me back to growing up. If Carol Danvers had pulled out a Tamagotchi, I may have died.
The thing about the soundtrack though is that it isn’t even all girl power songs. It’s a mix of ’90s classics and songs that you would probably put on a playlist if you were having a girls night out. I mean, I’d personally put Nirvana on my girls night out playlist, but that’s a me thing.
Overall, the movie does a great job of serving us a beautiful character and maintaining her charm throughout the film. The soundtrack is just a bonus for us who grew up in the ’90s, and is introducing the songs to the next generation. To be quite honest, I can’t wait to see little kids screaming No Doubt songs while running around.
Context-free reason you should see #CaptainMarvel: There is a fight set to No Doubt’s “I’m Just A Girl” and it’s just about the most cathartic fucking thing in the world.
