Captain Marvel Takes the Lead in First Official Avengers: Endgame Clip
In the first official clip released from Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers are working on a new plan, and Captain Marvel is confident of the role she’ll play in it.
We see Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, Rhodey Rhodes, Carol Danvers, Steve Rogers, and Thor at the Avengers compound. Natasha is studying an interactive map and sees some indication that “He”—Thanos, we presume—”used the Stones again.”
Bruce seems to take this as a suggestion they should go after him, and he errs on the side of caution, telling Natasha, “Hey, hey, hey, we’d be going in short-handed.” Rhodey points out that Thanos has “still got” the Stones. I wonder if the use of Stones here instead of Gauntlet is important at all? Has the Gauntlet ceased working after the effort of performing the Snap, but Thanos can still use the individual Stones? Just a thought. Maybe they don’t know it’s called the Infinity Gauntlet in this world.
Carol Danvers says, “So let’s get them. Use them to bring everyone back.”
Just like that?
“Yeah,” agrees Steve Rogers. “Just like that.” Honestly, I am here for Carol and Steve being on the same ready-for-anything and all-too-self-sacrificing page. I want them to be Captain pals.
“If we do this, how are we gonna know it’s gonna end any differently than it did before?” Bruce points out.
“Because before you didn’t have me,” says Carol with utmost confidence. It is so rare and so wonderful to see a female superhero be able to assert without batting an eyelash that she’s now the difference between victory and defeat. If this line rubbed you the wrong way, ask yourself why, and whether you’d feel the same way if it was, say, Thor delivering it with the same perfect certainty and initiative.
“Hey, new girl,” Rhodey begins, “everyone in this room is about that superhero life. And if you don’t mind my asking where the hell have you been all this time?”
“There are a lot of other planets in the universe,” Carol returns. “And unfortunately, they didn’t have you guys.” Now we know what she’s been up to since the ’90s!
That’s when Thor, who appears to be brooding, eating, and day-drinking in the corner, content to watch the proceedings, gets up and tests Carol’s mettle as we saw in the trailer before, summoning Stormbreaker—presumably to see if she’ll flinch. She passes with flying colors and they’re now best friends forever.
While we’ve seen bits from this scene before, this is the first time it’s been released all together like this. I’m going to assume that this is a relatively early attempt at getting the Stones from Thanos (if they go through with it here), since Natasha’s hair is still blonde (my barometer for telling where we are in this film). Going by this I’ll also assume that the attempt fails, but hey, at least everyone’s getting to know each other better.
