Leonardo DiCaprio Wants to Make a Live Action Captain Planet Movie Because Okay Why Not?
Someone call Don Cheadle.
Here’s a bit of news I know I didn’t expect to read this morning: Leonardo DiCaprio is looking to remake Captain Planet and the Planeteers, the environmentally-minded Saturday morning cartoon from our childhoods. It’s not going to be a cartoon, either. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s going to be a live action remake with a completely different tone, one that’s perhaps a bit more grown-up. “Sources say the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him,” says the report.
Is it just me or does that sound like it’s maybe a little bit like Galaxy Quest? I mean, if they decide not to go with the gritty, grim tone that’s taking over nearly all movies these days, then a comedic Captain Planet and the Planeteers a la Galaxy Quest sounds wonderful.
It should be noted that DiCaprio would be producing the film, not necessarily starring in it. While many of us would love to see how a green DiCaprio would fare on screen as a superhero, it doesn’t seem like that’s meant to be.
As far as development goes, it’s still early stages. The studio is still working out acquiring the rights to the original cartoon show. It’s going to be very, very interesting to see how this all plays out. Moreover, it’ll be super interesting to see who will bring a grim, sad Captain Planet to life on the big screen.
In the mean time, we’ll always have my personal favorite Captain Planet: Don Cheadle.
Trees. Everyone is trees.
