Watch the Trailer For Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, An Existential Crisis Illustrated With Puppets
Charlie Kaufman, writer of haunting films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich, has another eerie drama (or maybe romance?) on the way, titled Anomalisa. The trailer above reveals that the film will feature a lot of Kaufman’s usual fascinations, from existential crises to puppetry — especially since this film features literal stop-motion-animated puppetry, as opposed to … however you want to classify the puppetry elements of Being John Malkovich.
I loved Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich, and even though Anomalisa seems like it combines concepts from both of those, the trailer left a little to be desired for me personally. The puppetry actually looked fantastic — I was worried from the screenshots that this film would fall too far into the uncanny valley, but when in motion, I think the animated characters look beautiful. As for the plot, though … maybe I’ve just seen “man has existential crisis, meets alluring and mysterious woman who fascinates him but who might not be that interested in his existential crisis” too many times.
What do you think? Are you ready for another of Kaufman’s unusual adventures?
