Mediocre! Charlize Theron Officially Will Not Star In The Mad Max Sequels
Where's our Furiosa film, huh?
Here’s why Charlize Theron had “not heard anything” when asked about the Mad Max sequels in the works: her character, the show-stealing Imperator Furiosa, won’t be starring and may not even appear. Director George Miller told Digital Spy that of the two planned Mad Max follow-ups (a sequel and a prequel), one of the films doesn’t feature her character at all, and the other includes Furiosa in only one scene. “I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress,” Miller said.
It’s not clear from the quote whether Furiosa’s one scene happens in the Mad Max prequel, or in the Fury Road follow-up — and it’s also not clear whether that scene will remain in the final version of the script. As Miller points out, nothing is final, and these scripts have undergone a lot of changes over the years.
I’m sad to hear Charlize Theron won’t be returning for another star turn, but I can understand that the other Mad Max films would revolve around the titular hero — and Max may well meet other cool characters along the way. However, given the Furiosa furor, you’d think that some Hollywood bigshot somewhere might consider an Imperator Furiosa feature film, set after the events of Fury Road, describing the recaptured “green place” that Furiosa rules at the end of that film. Even though Max has to travel on and have his own adventures, there’s no reason why the narrative can’t branch out into further explorations of that weird world. Well, no reason except for the fact that female-led action films just don’t happen, ever.
Sigh.
