Walter Koenig (Chekov) to Receive Walk of Fame Star

It Came From Outer Space

The Hollywood Chamber of commerce today announced that Walter Koenig will recieve a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

Koenig famously starred in Moontrap, and had numerous guest starring roles on Babylon 5, the Canadian series The Starlost, wrote for Land of the Lost, and taught acting and directing at UCLA and other schools.

Nah, I’m just playin’ y’all, he was totally Chekov, navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James Tiberius Kirk.

From Star Trek.com:

Star Trek.com actually informed Koenig of the big news late this afternoon, but he at first thought we were mistaken. “I didn’t believe you,” Koenig admitted. “That is, I thought it was one of those erroneous rumors that occasionally gets spread. I assumed that they would contact those elected before the public announcement and, evidently, that’s not the case…”

Countless Star Trek fans pushed hard to make today’s news a reality, and Koenig had a special message for them: “They’ve been incredible and I’m deeply grateful for their support,” he said. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! And special thanks to my wife, Judy, (and also to) Sky Conway and Patty Wright.”

With Koenig’s confirmation, the full (named) bridge crew of the original series Enterprise now has a star on Hollywood Boulevard. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, and George Takei’s stars are already inlaid (along with DeForest Kelley and James Doohan). Grace Lee Whitney and Majel Barrett are now the only regular Star Trek: The Original Series cast members without stars, and in the case of Majel Barrett, we’ll have to wait until at least 2013 to support her nomination. The Chamber of Commerce only posthumously awards stars if the nominee has been dead at least five years.

Now that it has been announced, Koenig has five years to schedule his ceremony and show up in person, or the star won’t be put down. Also, despite being most famous for a role where he spoke exclusively in an exaggerated Russian accent, Koenig is actually from Chicago. In other adorable facts, he was George Takei’s best man. Adorable.
