After Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War “Reinvented” the Character, Chris Hemsworth Is Ready for More Thor Movies
In a recent interview with IGN, Chris Hemsworth indicated that, although he is now freed from his initial Marvel contract, he’d still be interested in more Thor films. After Thor: Ragnarok and the two next two Avengers films “reinvented” and “evolve[d]” the character, he said, he now has a “renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm” for the role.
“I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished Avengers 4,” Hemsworth said to IGN, “and that’s my contract—my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, ‘Wow, that’s it.’ Two or three films ago I was like, ‘Okay, a couple more.’ I was enjoying it, but I was like … I felt a little restricted.”
“And after this last experience with Taika,” he continued, “and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times—even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.”
“If I had the opportunity to [play Thor] again, I think I’d love to,” Hemsworth said. “I also think there’s an appetite for it now, or there’s a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we’ve kind of broken the mold a bit.”
It’s no secret around here that I adored Thor: Ragnarok and thought it really captured an essential, delightful Thor-ness while still strongly reflecting director Taika Waititi’s voice. However, Hemsworth’s comments about the last two Avengers films do have me quite intrigued. The Russo Brothers similarly hinted at some big changes for Thor in a recent interview, and it was along the same lines of “evolv[ing]” and changing. Asked which character they were “most excited about revealing” in Infinity War, Anthony Russo said, “I think Thor … he’s gone through a radical transformation, and he’s moving forward in a way where he can never go back. And that’s always a fun place to be with a character as a storyteller.”
Asgard’s my favorite corner of the Marvel comics universe, but that’s never been because Thor himself is a particularly dynamic or complex dude. I’m therefore very interested to hear that both the Russos and Hemsworth see him going to such “radical” and “reinvented” places in these films.
However, Hemsworth emphasized that no conversations have taken place yet about any more Thor movies. “Right now, it’s about Avengers,” he said. “…That’s the focus, in all honesty; I haven’t had conversations about anything else beyond that.”
Tessa Thompson chimed in on the idea, tweeting “Why not!” at the suggestion of more Thor movies, and now all I want is a new Thor movie where Valkyrie has a canonical, onscreen girlfriend. Make it so.
