America Tears Itself Apart in the Latest ‘Civil War’ Trailer

Kirsten Dunst in A24's 'Civil War'

A24 has released a new trailer for Civil War, the latest from Alex Garland, the filmmaker behind Annihilation, Ex Machina, and Men.

The second trailer for Civil War expands a little on the first without getting lost in the narrative weeds, though I will say it’s still wildly hard to believe that Texas and California would form an alliance—but I guess a mutual hatred of Florida will do that.

A24 previously released the first trailer for Civil War along with a poster name-dropping Garland’s 28 Days Later, suggesting his latest is more in line with the Danny Boyle horror-thriller

That very much seems to be the case, though the dystopia envisioned by Civil War isn’t too far off from our current reality. The film’s synopsis is brief and gets straight to the point: “A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.”

In the trailer, we see that America has been split into militant factions, with Nick Offerman playing the ostensible President of the United States (or what’s left of it) and Kirsten Dunst documenting the war as a correspondent.

Garland wrote and directed Civil War, which will be released in theaters and IMAX sometime in spring 2024. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, Sonoya Mizuno, and Karl Glusman. Spaeny, Henderson, Offerman, Mizuno, and Glusman all previously starred in Devs, Garland’s limited series tech thriller that aired on FX in 2020. Mizuno also memorably co-starred in Ex Machina.

We’ll know more about this mysterious new film next week, when the first trailer for Civil War arrives online.
