Freeform to Bring Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger to Television
I’m a sucker for young superhero teams in comics, so this is a welcome bit of news! Freeform, formerly ABC Family, will be bringing teen superheroes Cloak and Dagger to TV.
Cloak and Dagger will be coming to television in a new live-action series geared toward a young adult audience. As you may know from the comics, Tyrone “Cloak” Johnson and Tandy “Dagger” Bowen are totally products of the 1980s — they were introduced via Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man in 1982. Runaways who met on the streets of New York City, they each got their powers after having forcibly been given an experimental synthetic heroin (the 1980s were all about Just Say No and the “War on Drugs,” so everything was all about kids getting illicit drugs!) by a chemist who was testing his product on runaway kids. In newer comics, they were already mutants and the drug just “woke up” their latent mutant abilities.
The duo then 1) started falling in love, and 2) decided to fight crime, focusing on drug crime and helping runaway kids. Cloak wears the garment of the same name to hide the fact that he’s basically a human void, able to engulf and protect (or swallow) anything into himself. Meanwhile Dagger glows with a bright white light and can shoot shards of light at people (ie: daggers). Cloak’s hunger is eased by Dagger’s bright light, which is why they stick together—though there have, of course, been storylines where we see the consequences of them splitting up.
We’ve seen them with Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Runaways. Now, they’re getting their own show, and I couldn’t be happier! There’s no writer attached yet, but according to io9, the show will be “focusing on the romance between Tyrone and Tandy, described as ‘two teenagers from very different backgrounds’ who ‘find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love.'”
It’ll be cool to see what a live-action, YA Marvel show even looks like. Cooler still that a YA audience will be getting a female and a black male superhero at the same time. This is gonna be good!
