Stephen Colbert’s Painful, Awkward Story About George Lucas’ Colbert Report Visit
Stephen Colbert’s got a message for George Lucas, and the story behind it is absolutely studded with awkwardness and… what’s that feeling called where you feel embarrassed for someone else? Is there a German word for that? Anyway, that. The story behind the message is totally filled with that.
On the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert shared a story about Lucas’ past visit to The Colbert Report. Apparently one of Lucas’ assistants told Colbert that Lucas prefers to call lightsabers “laser swords” (snicker). So, Colbert being the absolutely stellar host that he is, refers to them as such when he asks Lucas if he’d like to have a “laser sword” duel, which Lucas accepts.
But moments before they begin to roll, Lucas leaned over to Colbert and said, “Most people just call them lightsabers.” Of course, Colbert had zero time to say that he already knows that, and that he was just calling them that because of Reasons. As someone who doesn’t like being told something I already know and understand, I really felt for him. To think about how long he’s held that story in…
Anyway, Colbert just wanted to say: “I know.”
Huh.
I see what you did there, Colbert.
(Fremdschämen! The German word is fremdschämen, by the way.)
