Jennifer Lawrence Said She Doesn’t Know Anything About Comics, so We Picked a Few We Think She Might Like

We had the pleasure of attending the X-Men: Days of Future Past premiere here in New York thanks to our friends at TCL. They got us on the red carpet where we asked Jennifer Lawrence what other female comic book characters she wanted to see on film, and her answer surprised us.

Our end of the audio is a little hard to make out, but the question was “What other female comic book characters would you like to see in movies?” We thought it was a good question given the recent talk of a solo Mystique film. We think Lawrence is in a unique position to potentially bring some other characters to the screen, so we were curious which comic book characters she likes.

Lawrence admitted she doesn’t know anything about comics, which was surprising. We thought everyone loved comics, but we get it. There’s a lot going on in comics. It’s a big world, and sometimes finding a good place to jump in can be difficult. So here are some comic titles we think Jennifer (and you, the non-Jennifer-Lawrence reader) might enjoy.

1) X-Men, Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel.

The current run (which started in June 2013) is all ladies, all the time. It’s a little tougher to get into if you don’t know anything about the mutants at Marvel’s disposal, but since J-Law’s got more than a passing knowledge, we figure she’ll dig it after getting settled for a few issues.

2) Young Avengers, Allan Heinberg and  Jim Cheung.

The new run by Kieron Gillain and Jamie McKelvie is pretty great, but we want to take J-Law back to the original 2005 run, because we bet she would love the HELL out of Kate Bishop’s introduction to the team. She’s basically Katniss Everdeen with more money and a wicked sense of humor.

3) Lumberjanes, Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, and Brooke Allen.

Another one that J-Law could jump into pretty immediately (there’s only 2 issues out, after all!), this series is about five friends at an all-girls summer camp who sneak out at night to fight monsters. It’s a hilariously, adorably subversive story that’s cool and weird and not at all what you’d expect.

4) She-Hulk, Charles Soule and Javier Pulido.

Currently four issues in, this series has a great sense of humor and would be a solid entry point for somebody who doesn’t know anything about comics but really appreciates confident women who are good at their jobs. Plus, Jennifer will share a name with the book’s protagonist, which shouldn’t actually matter but is still incredibly fun. Come on, tell me you don’t get excited over comic book characters with the same name as you.

5) Batgirl, Gail Simone, Ardian Syaf, and Vincent Cifuentes.

Gail Simone’s current Batgirl run is one of the best things DC has going for it right now. Even if you know nothing about the history of the character — her run-in with the Joker in The Killing Joke, her stint as Oracle — it’s easy to pick up and follow along pretty quickly.

6) Miss Marvel, G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona

Captain Marvel is also a solid choice and definitely worth a read, but I genuinely think that Jennifer will relate so much more to Kamala Khan. First of all, as a polymorph she’s basically got a better version (no offense) of Mystique’s shapeshifting powers. Secondly, her awkward high-schooliness and desire to fit in is so earnest and endearing, and refreshing to see in a superhero comic. That sounds right up J-Law’s alley.

Thanks again to TCL for getting us on the red carpet. We’ll have more conversations with the cast of the film and one of its producers up soon, so stay tuned. (We know you don’t really “tune” the Internet.)
