Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Disney+ TV series Ms. Marvel wrapped up season 1 on July 13, 2022. The series first premiered on June 8 and subsequently gained critical acclaim. Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a Pakistani American teen who fangirls over the Avengers and has trouble fitting in with her peers. However, her life changes when a bangle belonging to her great-grandmother, Aisha (Mehwish Hayat), awakens powers within her.

Khan develops the ability to harness cosmic energy and to create light constructs. As she works to hone her powers and develop her own superhero identity, she finds herself pursued by the Djinn, or ClanDestines, who seek her bangle so that they can return to their home in the Noor dimension. However, Khan senses that their intentions are more sinister than they’re implying, especially as their desperation turns into aggression and violence against her and her family. Ultimately, Khan has to dive into her family and their history to understand her powers and Aisha’s true story.

As of its conclusion, Ms. Marvel boasted a stellar 98% of Rotten Tomatoes. The series has been highly praised for its fresh perspective and style. Through the show, Marvel perfectly frames its first Muslim superhero and its first Pakistani American family. The show dives into their culture and history in way that is educational and respectful (though not without criticism). Additionally, Vellani truly shines as Khan and gives younger audiences a hero they can truly relate to.

Will there be a season 2 of Ms. Marvel?

(Marvel Entertainment)

Initially, as the series wrapped up, it had not been officially renewed for a second season. However, Vellani will return as Ms. Marvel elsewhere in the MCU, and we’ve been keeping a close eye on any potential word of a second season. In The Marvels, Vellani will appear alongside Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), on July 28, 2023. The film will be a sequel to Captain Marvel, as well as a continuation of Ms. Marvel.

With the exception of What If…? and Loki, the majority of MCU TV shows have not been renewed for second seasons. They have largely served as limited series and some, like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, were specifically designed to set up subsequent MCU films. Ms. Marvel seems to fit into this category of being a limited series that leads into a film.

Ms. Marvel director teases season 2

On September 21, 2022, Ms. Marvel director Adil El Arbi teased season 2 on social media. The director took to Instagram to share a short video of himself and co-director Bilall Fallah, discussing Ms. Marvel, talking about how Khan had to overcome her own perceptions of herself to deal with being thrust so suddenly into the superhero business. However, what really caught the attention of fans was the post’s caption, which reads, “Just reminiscing on our time spent in the MCU, who’s ready for season 2?!” Check out El Arbi’s post below:

So far, though, it’s difficult to say if El Arbi is just teasing fans or if he knows something about season 2’s status that we don’t. Rumors have been swirling for quite some time that the show was secretly renewed. Still, until Marvel officially confirms it, we can only guess as to the motives of El Arbi’s post. Perhaps it’s a hint at what’s to come, or maybe he’s just hyping up season 2 in hopes of making it a reality.

Ms. Marvel producer and cinematographer also weighed in

Before this tease, we’d already been intrigued by producer Sana Amanat revealing that the series was pitched as a limited series, but with the potential to extend beyond one season if audiences were particularly receptive to it. She told Screen Rant,

It is laid out as a limited series for her to go off and do other things. Like, it certainly establishes her hero. She will be going into The Marvels next, so that’s kind of there. But I will say, I really hope that she is a part… you know, I hope we get a season 2 is all I’m gonna say. I hope we’re a part of that.

Ms. Marvel cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin also gave an update on season 2. While speaking to ComicBook.com, in an article published on August 1, 2022, O’Loughlin confirmed that neither he, nor director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, have heard any plans for a season 2. Marvel’s focus for Vellani right now is on debuting her in The Marvels, rather than discussing a second Ms. Marvel season. Check out his statement below:

Listen, hand on heart, I can honestly say that at this stage, I haven’t heard of any plans for a Season 2. There’s so much going on with Marvel and there’s stuff happening and popping up all the time, but I haven’t heard of anything, Sharmeen hasn’t heard of anything. The next thing for Iman, and the character of Kamala is to be in The Marvels. But at this stage, there hasn’t been any talk of a season two on Ms. Marvel… I would love there to be a season two because I think season one was so much fun and such a great shake, and I think it’s really touched a lot of hearts, and people seem to be crazy for Ms. Marvel. That’s done so well. So listen, I think it’d be a lot of fun, certainly shooting. I had a huge amount of fun shooting the eps that I did on season one. So if I was offered the chance to be involved in the season two, hell yeah. Why not? What’s not to like about that?

The general consensus is that Ms. Marvel season 2 isn’t confirmed and it may still be a little too early to be discussing it. However, the crew behind the series is remaining hopeful and reiterating how much they would love to be a part of a second season.
