Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rachel Bloom Explains the Stories Behind “Period Sex” and Other Songs
Don’t be fooled by the name. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a funny and subversive series about a woman just searching for happiness. Sure, she quit her high-powered lawyer job in New York City to move to West Covina, California after running into her ex-boyfriend from summer camp but it’s more nuanced than that! The show is made up of a colorful cast of characters including main love interest Josh Chan, best friend Paula and sweetheart boss Darryl. Plus, she’s got a cool girl squad made up of Heather, whose default mode is sarcasm, and Valencia, former frenemy turned BFF.
Part of what makes the show so special are its outlandish songs . They range in subjects from accidental texts to getting a UTI from sex to even an oppression Olympics centering on Jewish suffering. Rachel Bloom, who co-created the show and stars it in, explains the story behind one of her boldest songs.
“‘Period Sex’ was a song I really went to battle for all season,” she told Vulture. “I was like, We are making this happen! By the time we teased it in the third episode, we knew it was going to be a full song at some point. I got in a booth with Adam and we collaborated on it. He put the ‘Period Sex’ vamp on loop and it was a combination of making shit up, going into the writers room for a few minutes, coming up with some more jokes, and editing it from there. The bridge was completely improvised and Adam created music around it. It’s weird because in some ways that song can’t be taken out of context—as a song itself, it’s silly, but I think the best context is to understand, This is what Rebecca wanted to sing all season? The song is kind of disgusting but also really empowering.”
This actually makes me want to work on the show. Coming up with songs like “Love Kernels,” the parody of Beyonce’s Lemonade, must be so much fun. You can check out the rest of the interview here.
