Crispin Glover and Jonathan Tucker Join the Cast of Starz’s American Gods

Recommended Videos

The cast for Starz’s American Gods adaptation just keeps getting better and better. It was announced today that Crispin Glover and Jonathan Tucker will be joining the cast of this highly-anticipated Bryan Fuller show. (Not to be confused with that other highly-anticipated Bryan Fuller show. Damn, he’s busy.)

[NOTE: Here be spoilers! If you’ve not read American Gods, or want to go into the show completely un-spoiled, please know that this casting news comes with information about differences between the book and the show. You’ve been warned.]

According to Spinoff Online, Glover (ever in our hearts from the Back to the Future franchise) has been cast in the role of Mr. World. For the show, he’s described as the leader of the New Gods, though in the novel, he’s the leader of The Black Hats who act more like New God goons. The official show description of the character describes him as “sometimes more challenged by his own subordinates than his enemies.”

What’s interesting is that Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom) is cast in the role of Low-Key Lyesmith (aka, Loki, get it?), who is described for the show as “wiry and fast-talking, with an offbeat sense of humor.” Interesting, because in the novel, Mr. World was revealed to be Low-Key. Now, it seems, the show is at least starting off by presenting them as two completely different people, er, deities, but in this adaptation, Low-Key will be “another iteration” of Mr. World. Huh? Where that means this will go is anyone’s guess, but we do now know there’s at least one major divergence from the original source material. The one thing that will remain the same from the novel is that we’re first introduced to Low-Key as a cellmate of Shadow Moon’s (played by Ricky Whittle) in prison.

Glover and Tucker join Whittle, along with Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday/Odin and Emily Browning as Laura Moon. Bryan Fuller will be writing and showrunning along with Michael Green, and Neil Gaiman will be serving as an Executive Producer. This has the potential to be very interesting television indeed.
