A Live-Action Cruella de Vil Movie From the Writer of The Devil Wears Prada
i'll just leave this here
Prepare to have the song stuck in your head forever.
It’s been thirteen years since we last saw Cruella in the flesh in 102 Dalmatians, and now Disney has decided it’s time to give the fur-clad villainess her own solo film. Maybe this time she’ll be after 103 miniature schnauzers. I, for one, just hope they keep the long cigarette holder and the ridiculous skunk hair.
The best part of this news is who is going to be involved: Aline Brosh McKenna, who will write the screenplay, also penned The Devil Wears Prada and worked on the new adaptations of Cinderella and Annie. Imagine if Cruella de Vil met Miranda Priestly. The world might explode. Glenn Close, who has previously played Cruella in the live-action Dalmatians films, will also be involved as an executive producer. No news yet on who will play the evil fashionista herself, or what the plot of the movie will be. My bet is that it will be a prequel, like Disney’s other recent villain-centric movie, Maleficent. We might get to see what exactly drove this woman to an obsession with killing cute fluffy animals. There has to be a tragic backstory in there somewhere.
Why do we love villains so much? A villain can make or break a story, and a good villain can be more memorable than any hero. Nobody would watch a whole movie about Roger and Anita walking their dogs and being nice people. You need a villain to add some complexity to the mix. That’s why, even though she doesn’t get the dogs, Cruella de Vil has the last laugh. At the end of the day, she’s the character you pay to see.
So: one of the best female Disney villains of your childhood coming back to the silver screen, written by a lady. Lock up your puppies; it’s gonna be a doozy.
